Job Summary

WM Walsh Surfacing has an exciting open opportunity for a 360 Digger Operator / Driver due to the expansion of our aggregate recycling and production operations based at our base of operations at The Hangar, in Sandy, Herts. The 360 Digger Driver is responsible for operating excavators safely and efficiently within a recycling facility, processing utility spoil and aggregate materials. The role involves sorting, loading, and moving materials to support recycling operations, ensuring maximum recovery, quality control, and compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate 360-degree excavators to handle, sort, and process utility spoil and recycled aggregates

  • Load and unload materials into crushers, screeners, and storage areas

  • Segregate waste streams (e.g., soil, hardcore, asphalt, concrete) to maximise recycling efficiency

  • Feed processing machinery safely and consistently to maintain production flow

  • Carry out daily plant checks and basic maintenance (fuel, oil, cleanliness, defect reporting)

  • Work closely with site supervisors and weighbridge staff to manage material movements

  • Maintain safe working zones and awareness of other plant and personnel

  • Assist with general yard duties as required

Health, Safety & Environmental Duties

  • Operate machinery in line with company health and safety policies

  • Adhere to site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)

  • Ensure safe handling of potentially contaminated utility spoil

  • Follow environmental guidelines for waste management and recycling processes

  • Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards across the site

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Skilled operation of 360 excavators (tracked and/or wheeled)

  • Good awareness of site safety and plant operations

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced recycling environment

  • Strong attention to detail when sorting materials

  • Good communication and teamwork skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid CPCS or NPORS card for 360 Excavator (above and/or below 10 tonnes)

  • Previous experience in recycling, waste management, quarrying, or construction environments

  • Experience handling aggregates, soils, and utility spoil desirable

  • Basic mechanical knowledge for daily maintenance checks

  • Full UK driving licence (preferred)

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor, yard-based role in all weather conditions

  • Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy plant machinery

  • PPE required at all times (helmet, hi-vis, gloves, eye and ear protection)

  • May involve early starts, shifts, or weekend work depending on operations

  • Safe operation with zero incidents or breaches

  • Efficiency of material handling and machine utilisation

  • Quality of material segregation and recycling output

  • Compliance with environmental and safety standards
