A BRIEF HISTORY OF RAF TEMPSFORD
RAF Tempsford, located near the village of Tempsford in Bedfordshire, England, was one of the most Secret airfields of the Second World War.
RAF Tempsford became the base for the Royal Air Force's Special Duties Squadrons, notably No. 138 and No. 161 Squadrons. These units were tasked with dropping and retrieving Special Operations Executive (SOE) agents and supplies behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied Europe. The operations were typically conducted during moonlit nights, earning the squadrons the moniker "moonlight squadrons." Aircraft such as the Handley Page Halifax, Westland Lysander, and Lockheed Hudson were employed for these missions.
